CBD: What You Need to Know
Cannabidiol aka CBD is a popular remedy used for many health ailments. It is one of over a hundred chemical compounds found within the cannabis plant. (both male and female plants)
Tetrahydrocannabinol aka THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid found within the female plants. CBD is not considered a psychoactive substance. (both CBD and THC have similar heath benefits, but one gets you high and one does not)
Both THC and CBD in concentrated forms are processed using the exact same methods. More often than not, CBD is diluted or added to another oil to help absorption and to help with serving portion size. (you need very little CBD per dose (5-100mg). The demand for CBD world wide is rapidly increasing and there are more and more studies fueling this rapid growth showing the amazing benefits of CBD.
Here are some of the benefits to CBD consumption:
CBD Can Relieve Pain: As most of know, marijuana has been used for thousands of years to reduce pain. The human brain contains a endocannabinoid system (ECS) which is a lipid signalling system that contains glands that produce an acid that binds to CB1 and CB2 receptors. These receptors are distributed in certain parts of your brain associated with certain functions:
Immune system Regulation
Scientist are discovering that CBD may reduce chronic pain by affecting the endocannabinoid receptor activity and help reduce inflammation. Personally, I find CBD to help with pain better than most over the counter painkillers. Higher doses make me sleepy, but I find 25 mg to be the perfect dose for pain and relaxation. CBD is highly effective for treating pain related to arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Both applications (oral, and topical) can be effectively applied. I used to rub CBD oil tincture on my knee before the gym and it always helped with my joint pain.
CBD May Reduce Anxiety: CBD will relax you. When it kicks in the feeling is calming and nice. THC can swing both ways, either no anxiety or it makes anxiety that much worse. CBD on the other hand, feels mildly sedative like and doesn’t come with a psychedelic trip after consumption (and a trip to McDonalds is not required. CBD is a promising alternative for sleep drugs and has even shown promising results for patients with post traumatic stress disorder.
All of These qualities are linked to CBD’s ability to act on the brain’s receptors for serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood and social behavior.
CBD Can Alleviate Cancer-Related Symptoms: Let me start off by saying that cannabis and cannabis products do not cure cancer. There are loads of websites claiming false claims and exploiting peoples hopes on this issue. The science shows us that CBD can help with the symptoms of Cancer but not cure cancer itself. CBD will help alleviate nausea, and pain. Using a combo of THC and CBD will help increase mood and appetite. CBD and THC is known to reduce pain better than just THC on its own.
Some test-tube and animal studies have even shown that CBD may have anticancer properties. For example, one test-tube study found that concentrated CBD induced cell death in human breast cancer cells. Another study showed that CBD inhibited the spread of aggressive breast cancer cells in mice. With that being said, we need to realize that these were test tube animal studies. They have not been successfully tested on people and may not work. More research is needed before Cannabis and cancer prevention claims can be taken seriously.
When purchasing your CBD supplement do not be afraid to ask the basic questions in order to assure you are purchasing a quality product.
· What extraction method was used to make the CBD product?
Solvent extractions can leach chemicals into your product so try and avoid those. Stick to CO2 extraction or fractionally distilled products. My next CBD blog will be on extractions and explaining how each one works.
· Is it broad spectrum CBD or CBD isolate?
Full spectrum CBD will still have traces of THC and other cannabinoids within it. CBD isolate is pure cannabidiol.
· Was the plant male (hemp) or female (flower)?
Personally, I always opt for female plants because the CBD and plant quality is generally higher quality than male hemp plants. The tender loving care provided to a THC and CBD plant is usually wat higher than a plant that produces CBD alone.
On a final note: CBD will make you less high if you’re way to stoned. There needs to be more research to prove this claim but the myth is CBD will help if you find yourself way too high and you need to be less high.
